Q. What is RCW?
A. Responsible Consumption Week (RCW) is a grass-roots initiative run for students, by students. We aim to encourage the mainstream UBC community to think critically about consumerism and to take responsibility for the impacts their daily purchases have on ecosystems and societies. Our ultimate goal is to facilitate concrete lifestyle changes towards a socially and ecologially sustainable future. We therefore take great care to create a positive, non-judgemental atmosphere in all of our events while providing the campus community with realistic alternatives to mainstream consumer goods.

Q. What is the VWYDF?
A. The Vote With Your Dollar Fair (VWYDF) is a two-day trade fair that showcases local businesses and non-profit groups operating on principles of ecological and social responsibility. It is RCW's unique way of reaching out to the broader campus community (so that we don't spend all our time preaching to the converted), and as such we create opportunities for positive, educational interactions between exhibitors and consumers. By bringing such a variety of progressive businesses and non-profits into the heart of campus, we allow students to explore alternative goods and services within the familiar setting of a university trade-fair.

Q. What else is going on this week?
A. RCW's events team is working with a host of environmentally and socially-minded campus groups including UBC Oxfam, Sprouts Organic Food Co-op, and the Student Environment Centre to put on a week of interactive, thought-provoking events! We target everyone from neophytes to gurus who wish to delve deeper into relevant social and ecological issues. Planning is now underway for RCW 2009, in the meantime please click here for last year's schedule.

Q. What is affected when Alma Mater Society (AMS) Conferences takes over?
A. Instead of a student-run event, the RCW will be separated into two components. The Vote With Your Dollar Fair will be organized by AMS Conferences, with a designated Conference Coordinator as point of contact throughout the course of the event. Exhibitors will have the chance to pay via credit card (Mastercard or Visa), cheque or cash (in person only). AMS Conferences will also ensure the sustainability and consistency of the Fair each year, without the need for the organization of the event to be passed along each year to different organizers.

The special events portion of the week will be organized by the Student Environment Centre.

Q. What kind of foot traffic can we expect?
A. About 10,000 students, staff, and faculty pass through the SUB every day. The flow changes depending on the time of day, but you can expect the most traffic in the early morning, around lunch time, and at the end of every hour as students change classes.

Q. What is provided at the booth?
A. Please see the registration package for full details.

Q. What kind of promotion goes on for RCW in general and the VWYDF in particular?
A. This year we have a creative and energetic promotions team raising awareness for our events on campus! We challenge ourselves to use as little paper as possible, so sidewalk chalk, listserve announcements, and word of mouth play a major part in our advertising campaigns. This year we will stress the unique educational opportunities of the VWYDF and encourage students to bring their questions to your booths. Funds permitting, we may even advertise on busses.

Q. Why can't I sell my food products?
A. Food products cannot be sold in the Student Union Building, as this takes away business from the various outlets in the building. The money from the outlets goes towards Alma Mater Society services for students. Depending on your food product, sampling maybe permitted. Please inquire when applying.
